Garrett Jay loves to let his heart and soul guide his photography and overall creative processes. A wide range of subjects and styles offers a peek inside his brain and how it works. He’s self-described as an artistic scatterbrain!

Currently more than 20 of his collections are offered on his website including: Waves are Energy, Urban, Hearts, Reflections, H2O, Sky High, and Minds of Their Own. Many more unpublished creations are available by request. Almost anything has the potential to ignite a spark and inspire him to explore new places, new subjects, and new perspectives. He’s shot in locations around the U.S. and around the world.

Decades of formal and informal photography learning, experiences and experimentations all started with his first photography class in high school. He states that he’s a hybrid of being self-taught and being formally trained and mentored. He sometimes breaks traditional photography rules while expanding creative possibilities through experimentation. Yet, some of these broken rules aren’t apparent to until after he’s created a piece of his work. His ultimate goal is to share his work with as many people as possible in order to increase their own joy even if only for a short while, but hopefully much longer.

Reach

“In the heart of the concrete jungle a.k.a. NYC, I captured this image in Washington Square Park to inspire happiness, optimism, hope, and other positive emotions. The colors within the bubble in the foreground represent overcoming obstacles or the grays in the background that sometimes feel all around us.”

Delicious

“It takes hundreds sometimes thousands of attempts for me to capture a very special wave image. I also carefully chose this image to be part of my Color Eyes Collection where I decide to experiment and play with unexpected colors and to exaggerate them.

My intent was to transform an oceanic moment into a surreal and emotionally evocative experience. The juxtaposition of the bold colors I chose hopefully challenge our perception of familiar natural elements and invite us to view through a more introspective and artistic lens.”

Bold and Beautiful

“I often take hundreds of wave pictures before potentially succeeding to capture a very special one. For this image I chose to use my Color Eyes methodology where I experiment with unexpected colors and exaggerate them with the intent of challenging our perception of natural beauty. Waves can be a stunning representation of energy and impermanence. Here the face of the wave could be a sign of the calm before the energy of the crash is released. Maybe it can also be interpreted as a metaphor for life – mounting pressure, reaching a crest, and letting go.”

It’s All About Perspective

“It takes hundreds sometimes thousands of attempts for me to capture a very special wave image. I also carefully chose this image to be part of my Color Eyes Collection where I decide to experiment and play with unexpected colors and to exaggerate them. The reasoning behind the name of this image is that before I published it, I showed it to several people of all ages and all walks of life. More than a few times, I was asked if I was holding it upside down. I conceded that you can display it the way you believe it should be – “Right side up”.”

Hex Reflects

“Greenwich Village, NYC – Right on the border of Soho, this installation of hexagonal mirrors on a simple building stopped me in my tracks. Fortunately, I seized the moment, because when I returned the next day, the mirrors had been removed! Hopefully, the angles and multidimensions create intrigue and a time for reflection; a pause from the everyday chaos around us.”
